The Assessment: A Lack of Light and Difficult Circulation
During an initial consultancy visit, the interior designer identified the inherent shortcomings of this house — dark and impractical despite a significant surface area (280 m² over 2 floors).
The ground floor clearly suffered from a lack of light despite some openings. It featured a large kitchen in the oldest part of the house, a combined bedroom-sitting room behind the fireplace, a completely enclosed study near the staircase, and even a shower corner under the stairs.
On the upper floor: 3 bedrooms, a small bathroom, separate WC, and a storage room with only 160 cm ceiling height. While the floor area was perfectly adequate for a family, circulation between spaces was difficult, volumes very angular, and the roof structure omnipresent.
The Project: Opening up the Spaces and Bringing in Light
Taking the owners' needs into account, the interior designer proposed a comprehensive renovation project aimed at opening up the spaces and optimising natural light.
Ground Floor
- The living area was opened up while retaining a cosy feel. A sofa bed was placed behind the fireplace for occasional guests.
- The fireplace was modified to accommodate a 3-sided insert radiating heat throughout the living space.
- Space under the staircase was opened to create a genuine open study looking onto the living area.
- A solid wood balustrade creates a visual link between the ground floor and upper floor.
- A large glazed French door was installed in the kitchen to maximise natural light.
- The WC was relocated next to the study.
- Large bespoke storage was designed near the staircase.
Upper Floor
- The interior designer favoured creating 2 beautiful bedrooms rather than retaining 3 small, dark ones — a third was no longer essential given the sofa bed on the ground floor.
- One bedroom features a particularly elegant semi-open shower room.
- The master suite offers a large bedroom with a dressing room and a bathroom with shower and bath.
- The landing was modified with an additional window at the stairwell opening.
